EVERETT – Everett Public Schools board members are expected to approve two new principals at tonight’s meeting.
Catherine Matthews is to take the helm at the 1,600-student Everett High School next year. She currently is principal at Lakewood High School, which enrolls about 700 students.
“I’m thrilled. This is a great school in a great district and I’m really looking forward to it,” Matthews said.
This is Matthews’ seventh year at Lakewood. Before that, she was an assistant principal and athletic director at Granite Falls High School, as well as a teacher.
Right now she is in “the transition phase … getting to know the students, staff and community.” Her goals upon taking the helm will include improving achievement and increasing the school’s graduation rate.
“Everett High School has a proud tradition of excellence in so many areas, we are all up for the challenge,” Matthews said.
The Everett High principal position pays $104,398 per year.
Meanwhile, Tobias Brenner is being recommended for the principal’s post at the 400-student Jefferson Elementary School. Brenner currently is a vice principal in the Lake Washington School District.
“He’s just top notch,” said Karen Reedy, the elementary school’s current principal. “I’m very excited to leave this fabulous community in his hands.”
Reedy, who has been principal at Jefferson for five years and in education for 20, is taking a leave of absence to move to Arizona, where she and her husband built a home.
“We’re going to see how well we like it down there. And I’ve got family down there, too,” she said.
Elementary school principal positions in the district pay $93,658 per year.
A principal for Penny Creek Elementary School has not yet been found. An interim principal continues serving there in the meantime.
