OLYMPIA — A law that takes effect July 1 in Washington will extend in-state college tuition rates to foreign professionals, their spouses and children.
The Seattle Times reports some called it the “Microsoft subsidy bill” in the Legislature. It helps foreign professionals in the country on temporary work visas, such as the H-1B.
The sponsor of the legislation, Rep. Ross Hunter of Medina, says employers in his Seattle eastside district sought the tuition break as a job recruiting tool. The Times says Microsoft has thousands of workers who may qualify.
In-state tuition and fees next year at the University of Washington are $7,677 compared with $24,352 for non-residents.
