GOLD BAR — Two political newcomers are vying for a seat on the Gold Bar City Council in the Nov. 6 election.
Jay Prueher and Susan Forbes have advanced to the general election after each garnered more votes than incumbent City Councilman Robert Amenn in the August primary. Prueher and Forbes have never held an elected public position.
Prueher and Forbes said that people are not happy about what the current council has done for the city. Both said they hope to bring a fresh perspective to the council.
Prueher, 62, a retired marine engineer, said that he wants to help the city of about 2,200 people grow in a managed way. The city has been adding many houses quickly without improving its infrastructure, he said.
“We are concerned about our environment here,” he said.
The city with limited resources has too many issues to tackle at once, Prueher said. His priority is to increase police presence in town, he said.
“We need to have an officer all the time,” he said.
Forbes, 51, serves on the city’s planning commission. She said she knows the key issues Gold Bar faces.
“I’ve been involved with the city as a volunteer for a number of years,” said Forbes, an administrative assistant for a local water district.
The city continues to grow. It’s important to get citizens involved in the city’s decision-making, Forbes said. During her campaign, she’s conducted a survey to learn how people feel about important issues. Those issues include whether to build a sewer system in the city and whether to increase taxes to pay for more police protection and to improve the city’s water system.
“I’m willing to listen to what people need to say,” she said.
