SEATTLE — The newest Washington State Ferry, the Tokitae, is expected to welcome its first passengers on June 24.
The ferry was supposed to start service Sunday, but it’s not ready yet.
The interim assistant director of the ferry system says they’ll need another week to finish crew training. George Capacci says the ferry has eight or nine crews to train in safety and operations.
Officials had hoped to have it running on the on the Mukilteo-Clinton route with the beginning of the June 15 summer service schedule.
It’s the first of three 144-car ferries being built for the state by the Vigor Industrial shipyard in Seattle for $388 million for all three.
Tokitae, pronounced “toh-kee-tay,” is a Salish word meaning “nice day, pretty colors.” It’s also the name of a Washington orca better known as Lolita at the Miami Sequarium.
