Democrat Strom Peterson, who is on his way to winning election to the state Legislature, says that he has plans for what committee assignments he will seek when the new House of Representatives organizes.
Peterson, a Democrat, holds a 60 percent to 40 percent lead over Republican Allen McPheeters for the position that 21st District Democratic State Rep. Mary Helen Roberts now holds.
Peterson, now a member of the Edmonds City Council, said Thursday that he has four committees on his list, knowing that he probably will get three assignments. Both the local government and public safety committees are on the list. The environment committee is on the list because the environment is one of Peterson’s long-time passions. The transportation committee also is on the list because it deals with another of Peterson’s long-time concerns.
The 21st Legislative District includes most of Edmonds, unincorporated areas north of Edmonds and Lynnwood and northeast of Lynnwood, all of Mukilteo, and part of south Everett.*
In the district’s other House contest, appointed Democratic State Rep. Lillian Ortiz-Self leads Republican Jeff Scherrer, 59 percent to 41 percent. Democratic State Sen. Marko Liias leads Republican Dan Matthews by a 55 percent to 45 percent margin. Less than 1 percent of ballots remain uncounted.
Liias moved from the House to the Senate after Paull Shin resigned in January; Ortiz-Self then won appointment to replace Liias.
