News briefly: Wood stove starts blaze in Monroe home

MONROE — A wood stove was blamed for a fire that caused about $20,000 damage Tuesday to a home in the 17200 block of Butler Road, officials said.

Crews were called just before 11 a.m. to reports of a chimney fire, Monroe Fire District 3 spokeswoman Audrey Duncan said.

The found smoke coming from the eaves of the two-story house, she said. Firefighters quickly put out the blaze and no one was hurt.

A Snohomish County fire marshal determined an overheated stove pipe likely started the fire, she said. The fire was ruled accidental.

Everett: FEMA takes a look at flood damage

Federal Emergency Management Agency officials visited Snohomish County on Tuesday to inspect damage caused by floods last week to roads and other public property, county emergency management officials said.

President Bush this weekend approved federal disaster relief for hard-hit counties in southwestern parts of the state.

Snohomish County officials are hopeful federal aid will be approved here to help pay for the nearly $15 million damage reported in the county.

FEMA officials must first visit the area to inspect the damage.

Federal teams will return to Snohomish County on Thursday to inspect damage to private property, said John Pennington, the county’s director of emergency management.

County officials continued to take damage reports Tuesday and damage totals are likely to rise, Pennington said.

People are urged to document flood damage, find photos of what their property looked like before the flood, and keep all receipts and estimates. They should then report the damage to the county by calling 425-388-5060 during business hours.

Lake Stevens: Police chase theft suspect

An alleged purse snatcher led Lake Stevens police on a chase across the U.S. 2 trestle and onto I-5 on Tuesday afternoon, police said.

A Seattle man believed to be in his 30s was seen smashing a car window and grabbing a purse at about 3 p.m. in the Haggen parking lot in the 8900 block of Market Place NE, said Lake Stevens Police Chief Randy Celori.

He drove off in a car with two other people, a Snohomish area man in his 30s and a Lake Stevens woman in her 20s, Celori said.

Lake Stevens police followed the car across the trestle and onto I-5, where the driver stopped near the Marine View Drive exit, he said.

Police were interviewing the three people Tuesday evening before determining if there was probable cause to jail them, Celori said.
