EVERETT – Both directions of I-5 will be closed for two nights, and possibly three, starting tonight so girders that will support a new 41st Street SE overpass can be set into place.
The freeway in Everett will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. each night. Traffic will be detoured around the closures, using the 41st Street and Broadway exits.
The 25 concrete girders, each weighing 82 tons, will be placed at the rate of about five each night, said Mike Cotten, project director for the state Department of Transportation’s Everett I-5 widening project.
A second closure is scheduled for Sept. 6-8 to finish the work.
The new overpass is being built in six months and is scheduled to open by Thanksgiving. Work on ramps and the span over Broadway will continue after that.
The work is part of a $260 million I-5 widening project that is about halfway complete, Cotten said.
The project, in addition to rebuilding the 41st Street overpass, will add new carpool and all-purpose lanes in north Everett. The new right-hand fly-over ramp onto northbound Broadway was also part of the project.
