MUKILTEO — People here won’t see a water and sewer tax this year.
Mukilteo City Council members have taken no action on the proposed utility tax they discussed earlier this year.
The city was considering a 2 percent tax on water and sewer use that would increase by 1 percentage point in 2012 and again in 2013.
The tax would remain at 4 percent in 2014 and would stay at that level unless increased in the future.
A small property tax hike also was discussed.
The city currently has no tax on water and sewer usage, said financial director Scott James. He estimated that a family of four pays about $42 a month for water and about $50 for sewer.
Under a 1 percent tax rate, people would pay roughly $11 extra per year.
“The city needs money to pay the bills and to deliver the services that we deliver today,” he said.
Council members likely will discuss the tax early next year. If it’s approved, people will start seeing bigger bills in the spring.
