SPOKANE — Spokane County prosecutors have decided not to charge a Washington State Patrol sergeant who shot an unarmed pregnant woman in September during a drug raid.
The Patrol told The Spokesman-Review that Sgt. Lee Slemp will remain on paid leave for an internal investigation of the shooting.
Slemp said he accidentally fired his gun while trying to prevent Keamia Powell from climbing out a window. The 24-year-old was nine months pregnant and delivered her baby at a hospital after the shooting. Powell has recovered and is facing drug charges.
