MILL CREEK – An early morning fire displaced a family of four and caused about $150,000 in damage to a home in the Martha Lake area Friday.
A family member was awakened by the sound of breaking glass about 12:30 a.m. and discovered flames eating away at the back of the house, said Leslie Hynes, spokeswoman for Snohomish County Fire District 1.
The smoke alarm sounded and the family fled the house, located in the 16200 block of Meadow Road. No one was injured.
The fire appeared to have started on the back patio outside a daylight basement and spread to the deck and attic.
A Snohomish County fire marshal investigator said the fire likely was caused by a cigarette discarded on the patio, Hynes said. The blaze heavily damaged the attic and basement rooms.
The family was renting the house and didn’t have insurance, Hynes said. The Snohomish County chapter of the American Red Cross assisted the family with temporary housing.
