It appears there are no roadblocks to building a new Mukilteo City Hall at a parcel in the southern end of Harbour Pointe.
The city is running tests on the soil at the 1.13-acre site at 4027 Harbour Pointe Blvd., on the northwest corner of Harbour Pointe Boulevard and Cyrus Way, city administrator Rich Leahy said.
The city needs to make sure there’s no pollution or unstable soils on the site that would prevent the city from building its permanent city headquarters there, he said.
“We don’t expect anything but we need to be sure before going in,” Leahy said.
The Mukilteo City Council voted 5-2 on Oct. 2 to build City Hall on the site.
The council settled on the choice after voting down four other sites, ending a 14-year debate about where to build a long-term home for city offices. The city has rented a former warehouse at 4480 Chennault Beach Road since 1992.
The city has a tentative agreement to buy the site from Pearl Tiffany of Arlington for $775,000. The City Council is scheduled to vote Monday on whether to approve the deal.
The city has 60 days to conduct the tests, and if nothing wrong is found, the sale can go through, said Jim Brennick, a Marysville real estate broker handling the sale of the property for Tiffany and her family.
If complications are found, the city and the family will have another one to three months to work it out.
The site has been used only as a residence, Brennick noted, and has been vacant for 14 years.
“I think the property is pretty much clear of contaminants or issues that would affect the closing of the transaction,” he said.
Preliminary once-overs were given to the site earlier, Leahy said. The upcoming tests will be more detailed and the property will be resurveyed, he said.
The city estimates it will cost a total of $8.7 million to buy and build on the site. If all goes smoothly, the staff could move into the new building in December 2008, Leahy estimated.
