A new no-shooting zone proposed by the Snohomish County Council near Panther Lake east of Snohomish is expected to be approved by County Executive Aaron Reardon in the next few days.
The zone affects 15 properties in Panther Lake Estates along 165th Avenue SE. A previous proposal affected up to 216 properties.
The County Council approved the no-shooting zone last week, with County Councilman Kirke Sievers the only one to oppose the measure.
County Councilman Jeff Sax proposed the no-shooting zone as a safety issue after residents said they were afraid of gunfire in the area. He later narrowed the proposal to cover only properties near specific complaints in response to gun-rights supporters. Sax said he generally disapproves of no-shooting zones.
Residents who asked the County Council to expand the no-shooting zone were told to circulate a petition.
There were 300 complaints of indiscriminate shooting last year in the East Precinct, which includes Panther Lake among 749 square miles of rural property, according to the sheriff’s office.
