Community choir presents ‘Messiah’
Handel’s masterwork “Messiah” is to be performed by the Arlington Community Choir and Orchestra at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the city’s Byrnes Performing Arts Center on the Arlington High School campus, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd.
The community choir of 150 members plans to present the most well-known Christmas selections of “Messiah.” The program also includes various school and community groups singing holiday favorites.
Festival-seating tickets will be sold at the door. Tickets are $5 or $15 for a family.
The concert is under the direction of Arlington High School choral teacher Lyle Forde.

Sisters set for annual beeswax candle sale
The Sisters of the Convent of the Meeting of the Lord plan to offer their candles for sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and again on Dec. 20.
During the convent’s annual Christmas festival, the Sisters will sell their Quiet Light Candles, handmade from beeswax, as well as other gifts.

Relay for Life committee wins award
The Stanwood-Camano Relay for Life committee recently received the Pacesetter Award from the American Cancer Society for the group’s organizational and fundraising efforts.
The 2009 Relay for Life campaign begins Jan. 21.

Marysville
City, law firm reach agreement for 2009
The city of Marysville and the Snohomish law firm of Weed, Graafstra and Benson, Inc. have agreed on a contract for legal services for the city for 2009.
The city will pay the attorney a retainer of $6,000 per month for 40 hours a week for four different types of work. These include overseeing prosecution for the city in the Municipal Court; attending four City Council meetings per month; providing legal advice to elected officials and city staff; and preparing ordinances, contracts and correspondence.
The city also will pay the city attorney $160 per hour or a paralegal $125 per hour for any time in excess of the basic retainer, for extra meetings, and for services in connection with local improvement districts.
The City Council approved the contract Monday.

Allen Creek meeting to discuss proposed home
A meeting on a plan to build a home in an environmentally critical area in the Allen Creek neighborhood is planned for Tuesday.
A neighborhood meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Allen Creek Elementary School, 6505 60th Drive NE.
The home is proposed to be built on property on the west side of 71st Avenue NE, west of the intersection with 74th Street NE. City law allows construction to take place in some critical areas if certain conditions are met.
City staff and the prospective home builder are expected to be at the meeting to answer questions.

Warm Beach
‘Lights’ going strong
“The Lights of Christmas,” an annual holiday light show at Warm Beach Christian Camp, is in its second of four weekends. Visitors can experience more than a million lights strung throughout the property, with special displays including a Nativity scene, three music stages, Polar Express train a petting farm and more.
The event continues today through Sunday, and Dec. 17-23 and 26-28. The display is open 5 to 10 p.m. each day. Tickets are $12 for adults ages 13-59, $8 for members of the military and seniors ages 60 and over, $7 for kids ages 4-12 and kids ages 3 and under are free. Tickets can be purchased online.

Tulalip
Help storm victims
The Tulalip Boys &Girls Club, the Tulalip Lions Club and other local agencies are partnering to collect new clothing, furniture, canned goods and other items to help American Indians in the Pine Ridge and Rosebud Indian Reservations in South Dakota, which were hit hard by snowstorms in November. The agencies plan to send a truck stuffed with donated goods to the reservations in mid-January.
All items can be donated at the Tulalip Tribes TERO office at 6103 31st Ave NE in Tulalip.
