Arlington: Workshop open to all researchers

The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society plans to host genealogical researcher Eric Stroschein at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the society’s library, 135 S. Olympic Ave. The presentation is free.

Stroschein plans to talk about how to use land records from the Homestead Act of 1862, the Timber Culture Act and cash sales of land warrants to find a land owner’s name.

Granite Falls: Budget meeting scheduled

The Granite Falls City Council is looking for input from residents about the city’s 2012 budget and what levels of service should be offered by law enforcement, parks, streets and community services departments.

A pubic meeting is scheduled at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Granite Falls School District Board Room at 307 North Alder Ave.

High school to hold College and Career Fair

Granite Falls High School is set to sponsor a College and Career Fair on Wednesday.

Representatives from four-year, two-year and technical colleges and the military will take part in the event, scheduled from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the high school, 1401 100th St. NE.

Financial aid presentations are also set to be included as well as representatives from local businesses for school-to-work options.

Lake Stevens: Relay for Life wins award

Relay for Life Lake Stevens recently received the 2011 National Rookie Relay of the Year recognition.

The American Cancer Society on Oct. 29 announced the distinction at the Relay for Life Summit and training held at the DoubleTree Hotel in SeaTac.

Relay for Life Lake Stevens was also recognized as a Pacesetter at the event. Local relays must surpass the goals and expectations set by the American Cancer Society to earn the award. The Lake Stevens community surpassed its fundraising goal of $50,000 as well as other goals including the number of teams and participants. Relay for Life of Lake Stevens raised more than $143,000, had 80 teams and more than 1,200 participants.

The team was also named earlier this year as the Rookie Relay of the Year in the Great West Division, which consists of 12 western states.

The first team meeting for the 2012 Relay for Life Lake Stevens is scheduled at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lake Stevens High School library, 2908 113th Ave. NE.

Arlington’s Relay for Life won the National Rookie Relay Team award in 2010.

Stanwood: Historian to talk about Beatles

Music critic and author Richie Unterberger plans to take his audience on a magical mystery tour through the archives of unreleased Beatles music and film at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Stanwood Library, 9701 271st St. NW.

Unterberger also plans to talk about the social and artistic legacies of Bob Dylan, the Byrds and other groups at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, also at the library.

The programs are supported by Stanwood/Camano Friends of the Library and Sno-Isle Libraries Foundation.
