Arlington: Event will help fund scholarships
Arlington Dollars for Scholars, which distributes scholarships for high school seniors each year, is sponsoring its fall fundraiser. Last spring the chapter awarded $50,000 to 73 students.
Ugly Tie Bingo Night is set for 6 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at Presidents Elementary School, 505 E. Third St.
Cost is $10 a person for 15 games or $25 for 15 games each for a family of two adults and two children. Prizes are valued at $25 or more. Those who wear ugly neckties increase their chances to win a prize. Pizza, popcorn, cookies and drinks are set be sold starting at 5:30 p.m. when the Star Energy Dance Troupe plans to perform.

Arlington: Hospital to celebrate award
People in the Cascade Valley Hospital District are invited to attend a reception from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Cascade Valley Hospital Café, 330 S. Stillaguamish Ave.
Cleverley and Associates, a national health care consulting firm, recognized the hospital in its list of top 100 hospitals in the country based on financial position, low-cost care and quality of care. The other two facilities in the state that received the award are the University of Washington Medical Center and Virginia Mason Medical Center. Publicly reported statistics provided the fodder for the awards, hospital spokeswoman Kelly Penny said.
Arlington: School bands plan car wash
Arlington High School’s bands plan to offer their 16th annual car wash-a-thon from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the school, 18821 Crown Ridge Blvd.
Students collect donation pledges for the total number of cars they can wash that day, up to a maximum of 150. There is no charge for the car wash, but donations will be accepted. The money goes for new band instruments and travel expenses.
Arlington: Learn how to build trails in class
A hands-on trail building workshop for private forest landowners in Snohomish County is set for 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday off Burn Road near Arlington. WSU Extension forestry educators plan to offer the class.

Darrington: Learn about fire lookouts
“Lightning & Loneliness,” a presentation and slide show about the region’s fire lookouts and the people who staffed them, is set for 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday at the Mansford Grange on Railroad Avenue in Darrington, about three blocks behind the Darrington IGA.
The previous afternoon of presentations about the lookouts had standing-room-only crowds. Coffee will be served at noon. People are invited to bring their photos, memorabilia and stories to share.
