Arlington: Festival of the River

The 22nd annual Stillaguamish Festival of the River and Pow Wow is set for today through Sunday at River Meadows County Park, 20416 Jordan Road. Entertainment, educational booths and activities are planned.

Gates open at 1 p.m. today for a concert that features Jesse Colin Young, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Gates open at 10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Free admission, but $5 for parking. The event is sponsored by the Stillaguamish Tribe.

Lynnwood: Youth football team car wash

The Lynnwood Tigers youth football teams are planning a car wash Sunday to raise money for scholarships.

The car wash is set to begin at noon at the Lynnwood Les Schwab, 4933 196th St. SW.

Marysville: Nonprofit holds Shop and Shred

Quilceda Community Services, a non-profit that provides residential care for special-needs adults, is hosting a Shop and Shred fundraiser Saturday.

Materials to be shredded can be brought to the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1402 State Ave. A yard sale is planned from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Shredding fees are $3 per shopping bag and $7 per box.

Stanwood: Public works director retires

Stanwood public works director Andrew Bullington has retired. The city’s acting director is Kevin Hushagen, a longtime city employee.

County: Help stock kids’ backpacks

This summer the YWCA has a goal of helping more than 1,300 homeless and low-income children get supplies for the coming school year.

Donate $35 and the YWCA will provide a fully-loaded backpack for one child or teen.

Volunteers sought for Days of Caring

Registration is open for United Way’s Days of Caring, planned for Sept. 23 and 24.

Projects are available throughout Snohomish County and continue to be added daily. Teams and individual volunteers can go to www.uwsc.org and click on “Days of Caring” or “Volunteer” to find projects.

Hands-on projects include painting, building, cleaning, environmental projects and reading to kids.

Agencies can register their Days of Caring projects through Aug. 31. Individual volunteers may register through Sept. 12.

A total of 950 volunteers gave 5,225 hours during the Days of Caring last year, United Way spokeswoman Deborah Squires said.
