State bans new wells in area near Stanwood
The Department of Ecology has closed a small drainage basin to new domestic wells.
By law, no more water is available underground in the drainage basin for Carpenter and Fisher creeks. The basin extends south from Mount Vernon into a 3.6-square-mile portion of Snohomish County northeast of Stanwood. The partial closure affects 27.7 square miles in all.
The department will allow new domestic wells in the basin if a landowner can provide an offset for the water used. Homes with existing wells and areas served by public water systems are not affected.
The area is part of the much larger Skagit River Basin. Water taken from wells affects the flow of nearby streams. The minimum flows protect fish and other natural resources.
