Stanwood: Deputy fire chief resigns

Darin Reid, deputy fire chief of the Stanwood-Camano Fire Department, resigned his post in late January to pursue further education.

“I am very sorry to see him leave, but I know he will have exciting opportunities in the future. Darin has been a wonderful asset to the city of Stanwood,” Mayor Dianne White said.

Fire Chief Mike Ganz said the department will miss Reid.

Because of decreased revenue and a tight budget, the department will not replace Reid, Ganz said.

Student heads to state poetry competition

Stanwood High School student Samantha Tichota, 16, is headed to the state Poetry Out Loud competition March 5 at the Broadway Center for the Performing Arts in Tacoma.

Stanwood is the only school in Snohomish County participating in this year’s Poetry Out Loud competition. Tichota shared top honors Tuesday at the regional contest against students from Skagit, Whatcom, Island and San Juan counties.

The state winner goes to nationals, and the winner there takes home a $20,000 scholarship.

For the regional contest, Samantha recited poems by Carl Sandburg and Ella Wheeler Wilcox.
