Arlington: Officer is employee of the year

Patrol officer Mike McQuoid is the 2010 Arlington Police Department employee of the year. Selected overwhelmingly by his peers, McQuoid was honored by Police Chief Nelson Beazley at the Jan. 18 City Council meeting.

McQuoid began his service with the department in 1999.

Camano Island: Emergency preparation

The Stanwood and Camano Island Relief Societies of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints offers its second annual Emergency Preparedness Open House from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 795 Ell Road, Camano Island.

The free event aims to better prepare people in Snohomish, Skagit and Island counties for emergencies.

Emergency preparedness strategies, including 72-hour kits, pet care during emergencies, water purification and food storage techniques are to be shared. Demonstrations and food samples will be available. Representatives from local emergency response teams plan to present information, answer questions and distribute print material, including coloring pages for children.

Darrington: Librarian to retire

Longtime Darrington librarian and manager Linda McPherson is retiring at the end of the month. McPherson, a 1963 graduate of Darrington High School, has worked in the library for 28 years. In retirement she plans to build furniture.

A reception for McPherson is set for 2 to 5 p.m. Monday in the library, 1005 Cascade St.

Marysville: Defensive driving for seniors

Adults age 55 and older can register at the Ken Baxter Community Center for a defensive driving course.

The two-day classroom course is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Feb. 9 and 10 at the Marysville Fire Station 66. The cost of the class is $12 for AARP members and $14 for nonmembers.

The fire station is located at 40th Street and 71st Avenue NE.

Musicians needed for summer concerts

Marysville Parks and Recreation is seeking musicians for the 2011 Sounds of Summer Concert Series scheduled to begin in July.

Musicians and bands interested in performing can call the information line at 360-363-8451 for details on how to submit their information. Business owners who would like to sponsor a concert event can also find sponsorship details by calling the information line.

The Friday concerts are scheduled at 7 p.m. at Jennings Memorial Park, 6915 Armar Road.

Silvana: Donations needed for fair auction

The Silvana Fair Board Auction is set for March 12 at Viking Hall in Silvana with auctioneers George Magnochi and Dave Fenton. The door prize at the end of the auction is $250 in cash.

Fair board members plan to collect donations from merchants.

People who want to donate new items for the auction are asked to call 360-652-8682.

Stanwood: Volunteers needed for bird fest

Organizers of the 2011 Port Susan Snow Goose & Birding Festival are looking for volunteers to help with registration and activities throughout the weekend of Feb. 26 and 27 in Stanwood and on Camano Island.
