A Sequim High School football player was reported in serious condition Saturday night after brain surgery at Harborview Medical Center.

Adrien Gault’s stepfather, Kevin McCarter, said the 17-year-old gave a thumbs-up sign after he came out of surgery.

Gault ran into a teammate during warm-ups Friday and came out of the game complaining of a headache before going into seizure in the second quarter, McCarter said. Gault eventually slid into a coma on the sidelines.

Gault was taken to Olympic Medical Center by ambulance and airlifted to Harborview when it was determined his brain was hemorrhaging.

Tacoma: Police hunt for teenager’s shooter

Tacoma police were searching Saturday for a gunman who shot and killed an 18-year-old Tacoma man, detective Chris Taylor said.

The shooting late Friday on E. K Street does not appear to have been gang-related, Taylor said, but he couldn’t say what might have prompted it. Detectives interviewed people and followed leads all day Saturday and into the night.

The victim, Robert Tapia, 18, of Tacoma was in the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s car when he was shot, Taylor said.

Witnesses told police that a group of six or eight young men surrounded the car, which then sped away. Tapia’s girlfriend, who was behind the wheel of the car, called 911 for help as she drove, Taylor said.

Rescuers found her and Tapia, still alive, in the car about a mile from the shooting scene. Tapia was pronounced dead at Tacoma General Hospital at 11:36 p.m.
