SEATTLE — Federal officials say 16 people were arrested in Skagit County in connection with a Mexican drug trafficking ring.
The U.S. Department of Justice says the drug ring allegedly smuggled cocaine and heroin from Mexico into the Skagit County area.
Agents seized 5 pounds of heroin, 2 pounds of cocaine, $23,000 in cash, seven vehicles and two firearms on Thursday. Six of the people arrested made their initial court appearance on Thursday as well. The youngest person arrested was 18 years old.
Those arrested face charges with sentences ranging from 10 years to life in prison.
Officials say investigators used wiretaps and informants to infiltrate the drug ring, which recruited people to smuggle from Tijuana, Mexico, to the area.
Ashford: Road to Mount Rainier’s Paradise to reopen
The primary access road to Paradise in Mount Rainier National Park will reopen Saturday.
The road had been closed for several weeks by avalanche danger and storm damage. Last week, heavy rains also resulted in a landslide that took out about 100 feet of one lane.
Acting park superintendent Randy King said Thursday that flaggers will control travel through the damaged area.
