Northwest briefly: 2 skiers found after avalanche hits B.C. resort

KELOWNA, B.C. — Two people who were unaccounted for after an avalanche hit a ski resort near Kelowna, B.C., have been found safe in the resort’s village.

Two skiers who were partially buried in the snow were rescued after the avalanche came down late Sunday morning in an area known as the Parachute Bowl, and on a particular difficult run called “The Cliff.” Those two — one of them a 12-year-old boy — were quickly rescued and are in good condition.

Ski resort vice-president Michael Ballingall says two more people were reported as unaccounted for but were later found in the resort village.

Ballingall says the avalanche happened after the first sunny day in almost two weeks softened some of the snow.

Coincidentally, the avalanche occurred as an avalanche seminar was under way at the resort.

Ballingall says that allowed 50 trained experts to be on the site of the avalanche quickly.

Tacoma: Man pleads guilty in wife’s death

A man accused of shooting his wife, posing her body in front of a television playing a pornographic video and ransacking the house to make it look like a burglary has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.

A jury convicted Daniel Carlson, 36, of Kapowsin, and his mother, Carol Jean Carlson, of first-degree murder in 2003, and each was sentenced to 37 years in prison. But an appeals court later overturned the convictions, saying some evidence had been improperly admitted during the trial.

Prosecutors alleged the two shot Lisa Ann Dahm Carlson, 27, three times — twice in the head and once in the chest. Prosecutors argued Lisa Carlson was planning to leave her husband and take their twin sons with her.

After the shooting, her body was posed to make it look like she had been watching a pornographic movie when she died. Trial judge Lisa Worswick said the positioning of the body factored into her decision to impose sentences beyond the standard range of 25 to nearly 32 years.

On Friday, Daniel Carlson maintained his innocence but pleaded guilty to second-degree murder with a firearm enhancement, deputy prosecutor Mary Robnett said.

Bellingham: County wants $71 million

BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Officials in Whatcom County plan to ask federal officials for more than $70 million to help prepare for the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, B.C.

The Whatcom Council of Governments projects as many as 175,000 people will travel north through the county on I-5 in the two weeks before the games — a 50 percent increase from 2004.

Whatcom County Executive Pete Kremen says he’s also worried about terrorist threats.

He’s traveling to Washington, D.C., in mid-January to meet with members of the state’s congressional delegation and White House staff.

Kremen has drafted a request for $71.3 million for expenses including a regional emergency operations center and equipment upgrades for fire and law enforcement agencies.

Kingston: IPod triggers family fight

A 13-year-old boy, upset Friday afternoon that his father would not let him have his iPod, bit the 46-year-old man and kicked him in the groin before he was joined by his mother in the pummeling.

Kitsap County deputies were called to the house on the 26000 block of Trophy Lane NE on Friday at about 2 p.m. following the assault, reports said.

The father said that his son had become impatient because he wanted to use the family’s computer to load songs on to his iPod, but the father was using the computer at the time.

The father left the room and when he returned, the son had reset the computer and was downloading songs onto the device. The father took the iPod away and wouldn’t let the son have it back, which sparked the scuffle.

During the fight, the son bit his father on the finger in an attempt to loosen the man’s grip on the iPod, breaking the skin. Then the son kicked his father in the groin. As they struggled, the 44-year-old wife and mother appeared and tried to determine what was happening.

She punched her husband in the face several times, then she and the son left.

She was arrested and booked into the Kitsap County jail for fourth-degree assault. A report of the son’s involvement in the fight was forwarded to the Kitsap County Prosecuting Attorney’s juvenile division office for review.

The 55-year-old woman called Bremerton police Friday to report the missing jewelry, reports said.

She said she had several parties and many people over to her house on the 3200 block of 19th Street between Thanksgiving to New Year’s Eve.

Then she noticed jewelry missing from a box she kept, including a $7,000 diamond ring and three bangle bracelets, worth about $135 each.

She told officers she thought the thief was someone who had attended one of her parties, but she didn’t know who.
