PORT ANGELES – A couple charged with abusing elderly patients at their adult-care home in nearby Sequim have pleaded not guilty in Clallam County Superior Court.
John K. Packer, 33, and Carolyn S. Hardwick, 58, ran Garden Grove Adult Family Care, where three residents died suspiciously in 2001 and 2002.
They were each charged last week with two counts of second-degree manslaughter, one count of first-degree criminal mistreatment and two counts of second-degree criminal mistreatment.
The home was closed in November 2002 by the state Department of Social and Health Services.

Bellingham: Woman poses as hospital worker
A woman posing as a St. Joseph Hospital employee went to a Whatcom County home this week, offering to take pictures of their new baby. “St. Joseph never sends its employees to homes, and this woman is not in any way affiliated with the hospital,” spokeswoman Nicci Noteboom said. The woman went to the home of a family that had their baby at St. Joseph in December. After taking photos, she demanded $300, Noteboom said.

Oregon: Rossi urges GOP to reach out
Dino Rossi, who lost the closest governor’s race in Washington history, told Oregon Republicans on Saturday he ran as strongly as he did by boldly reaching out to Democrats and independents. Rossi was the keynote speaker at the 41st annual Dorchester Conference, a socializing and politicking gathering started by former Oregon Sen. Bob Packwood that is not an official Republican Party function. Republican candidates in Washington – as in Oregon – face the challenge of lagging behind Democrats in voter registration and have to lure non-GOP voters to win statewide office, Rossi said.

Alaska: Aurora rocket crashes near Fairbanks
A rocket launched for aurora research Sunday from Poker Flat Research Range malfunctioned and crashed north of Fairbanks. Wreckage from the rocket was spotted in the rocket range’s impact zone in the White Mountains. The 70-foot, 2-inch four-stage Black Brant XII rocket reached an altitude of about 18 miles high and flew for five minutes before crashing. The rocket was part of a project by Kristina Lynch, an assistant professor of physics and astronomy at Dartmouth College. Lynch was hoping to investigate the motions and structure of electron precipitation found more than 300 miles above Earth.
