Maureen Elizabeth Wear, who once worked to tamp down crime in Tacoma neighborhoods, was sentenced Friday to 19 years, eight months in prison for child rape and child molestation.
The victims were relatives of Wear and her longtime boyfriend, Lee William Giles Jr., a retired Tacoma police officer. One boy and two girls were abused from 1995 to 2006, according to court documents.
Giles, 63, was convicted on similar charges and also sentenced earlier this month to 19 years, eight months in prison.
The court file of Wear’s case includes letters from people who praised her work with Safe Streets, a nonprofit agency that helps neighbors fight crime. Some of the letters from relatives and friends said Wear, 47, committed her crimes in part because Giles manipulated her and she was too devoted to refuse.

Prescott: Bus, fuel truck crash, injure 10
A fuel truck with an empty tank and a chartered bus crashed and overturned on an icy highway in southeastern Washington, injuring about 10 people.
It happened on Highway 124 near Prescott, north of Walla Walla, at 6:15 p.m. Saturday. A police dispatcher for Walla Walla County said details are sketchy, but at least two cars skidded into the wreck. Both the bus and tanker turned onto their sides.
Early reports indicated the bus had about three dozen passengers, and that two of the injuries might be serious.
