SEATTLE — A University of Washington professor says a recently discovered fish that crawls instead of swimming and has forward-looking eyes like humans could be part of an entirely unknown family of fishes.
The creature sighted in Indonesian waters off Ambon Island has tan- and peach-colored zebra-stripping. It uses its leglike pectoral fins to burrow into cracks and crevices of coral reefs in search of food.
UW professor Ted Pietsch says this relative of the anglerfish will have to undergo DNA scrutiny to verify that it is unique. But the world’s leading authority on anglerfish says he’s never seen anything like it.
Disposable grocery bag fee proposed
Paper or plastic? Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels and City Council President Richard Conlin say the answer is neither.
The two are proposing a 20-cent fee on disposable shopping bags at the city’s grocery, drug and convenience stores. Their plan also calls for a ban on foam take-home containers, plates and cups at restauraunts.
Conlin and Nickels say paper and plastic bags and foam containers are all bad for the environment, and they hope charging a fee will encourage people to bring reusable bags when they shop.
Ridgefield: Complaint of cat leads to raid
When a police officer went to the home of a Ridgefield man who had complained about a neighbor’s cat, the officer smelled marijuana.
A drug task force returned with a search warrant last weekend and found 84 plants in a raid on the man’s home.
