WALLA WALLA — The state Department of Corrections is preparing for an execution Dec. 3 at the Washington state Penitentiary at Walla Walla.
The department says a federal appeals court ruling has lifted a stay of execution for Darold Ray Stenson.
The 55-year-old was convicted of aggravated murder for the 1993 shooting deaths of his wife, Denis Stenson, and his business partner, Frank Hoerner, in Clallam County.
Seattle: Bike messengers on way out
The Seattle bike messengers who pedal in out of downtown traffic to deliver documents could be out of jobs when the King County Superior Court system shifts next June to filing all legal paperwork electronically.
Superior Court Clerk Barbara Miner told a Seattle newspaper the change will affect the bulk of nearly 8,000 documents filed each day at courthouses in Seattle and Kent.
The owner of one messenger service, Ron Belec of North West Legal Support, says many couriers lost their jobs when the federal courts shifted to electronic filing. He expects many of the remaining 100 or so bike messengers in Seattle to be out of work when King County makes the transition.
Snoqualmie: New casino opens Thursday
The King County sheriff’s office is preparing for heavy traffic after the new Snoqualmie Casino opens Thursday in Snoqualmie.
As many as 30,000 people are expected to back up the I-90 exits and surface roads between Snoqualmie and North Bend. Singer Jessica Simpson headlines Friday night’s events.
The $375 million casino has 1,700 electronic slot machines and five restaurants. It employs about 1,300 workers.
Vancouver, Wash.: Teen given 55 years
An 18-year-old gang member was sentenced to 55 years in prison for killing a rival gang member in Vancouver.
The teen, Orlin Campos-Cerna, asked for forgiveness at Tuesday’s sentencing in Clark County Superior Court.
The Vancouver Columbian reports he was convicted of murder last month for the October 2007 shooting of a 34-year-old rival gang member.
