Northwest Briefly: Hood Canal bridge may reopen soon

SHINE — The Hood Canal floating bridge could reopen in a few days.

The Transportation Department says the day may be determined by tests Tuesday on the drawspan. It must complete 20 perfect openings in a row.

The work is ahead of schedule. The department had expected the assembly work on the $500 million project would keep the bridge closed until mid-June.

Port Orchard: Soldier killed in Iraq

A Washington National Guard soldier from Port Orchard is dead of injuries suffered in a non-combat-related vehicle rollover in Iraq.

The Defense Department announced Monday that 20-year-old Pfc. Samuel Stone died May 30 in Tallil, Iraq.

It’s the first death the brigade has suffered since deploying to Iraq last fall.

Seattle: Wooden pipes carry sewage

Two pipelines that carry up to 60 million gallons of sewage a day under Seattle’s Salmon Bay are made out of wood.

The two 36-inch lines are built like barrels with staves and hoops. They were laid in 1935 across the bottom of the waterway that’s part of the connection between Puget Sound and Lake Washington. They carry waste from north Seattle to the West Point treatment plant in the Magnolia neighborhood.

King County is preparing to ask for bids on a $44 million project to replace the wooden pipes.

Tunnel problem delays sewage plant

Work on a $1.8 billion sewage treatment plant has been stalled by the breakdown of a machine boring a tunnel in the Kenmore area north of Seattle.

The King County Wastewater Treatment Division says it will take months to make the repairs because of the difficulty working 320 feet below ground.

The Seattle Times reports the plant’s planned opening in 2010 had already been pushed back to late 2011 before this problem.

Mayor Greg Nickels files for third term

Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels has filed for re-election. If he wins it would be his third term.

Even before Monday’s filing, Nickels drew challengers who include City Councilwoman Jan Drago, former Sonic and Washington State basketball player James Donaldson and T-Mobile executive Joe Mallahan.

Biker rams back of ambulance on I-5

The State Patrol says a motorcycle rider apparently wasn’t paying attention when he rammed the back of an ambulance on I- 5 in Seattle.

The ambulance had stopped in the northbound carpool lane Monday morning to help at a seven-car fender bender in the southbound lanes. The cyclists was traveling at freeway speed in the northbound lanes when he rear-ended the ambulance.

E. Wenatchee: Lawnmower injury

A 2-year-old boy riding on the back of his grandfather’s lawnmower was injured in East Wenatchee. The Douglas County sheriff’s office says the grandfather didn’t know the boy had stepped off Sunday and backed over his legs. The hospital says he’s in serious condition Monday.
