TWIN FALLS, Idaho — A spokesman for Robbie Knievel says the motorcycle jumper wants to follow in his daredevil father’s footsteps and attempt to jump the Snake River Canyon in southern Idaho.
Jeff Lowe says Knievel will be in Twin Falls on Monday to discuss the plan with local officials, and that the jump is tentatively set for the Fourth of July weekend in 2011, almost four decades after his father’s try.
Evel Knievel, who died in 2007, failed to clear the chasm in 1974 in a rocket-powered “Skycycle” when the parachute malfunctioned and deployed after takeoff.
Shawn Barigar is president of the Twin Falls Area Chamber of Commerce. He tells The Times-News that local government officials and business leaders have been invited to attend the private meeting with Knievel.
Bremerton: Crime foiled by workers
Bremerton Police say McDonald’s employees thwarted a robbery attempt by tackling a man who demanded money and threatened to shoot employees.
Bremerton Detective Sgt. Kevin Crane says a masked man came into the restaurant shortly after midnight Friday. He was holding something under his clothes that made it appear he had a weapon.
After his threats, a 20-year-old employee confronted him and the suspect punched him in the face. Crane says two other employees, both 22, joined the struggle while another called 911.
Olympia: Salon can’t take ‘Fifth’
National retailer Saks Fifth Avenue wants Olympia’s Salon Fifth Avenue to change its name.
The New York City-based company says the longtime downtown Olympia business has a name that falsely implies the salon is affiliated with its retail company. The salon has also been told in a “cease-and-desist” letter that the retailer has an issue with its logo.
Saks Fifth Avenue doesn’t operate a store in Washington.
Salon operator Elaine McConkey says she thinks it’s ridiculous that such a large business is picking on such a small one.
Salon Fifth Avenue has been in downtown Olympia for about 30 years. It was on Fifth Avenue for years before moving to Capitol Way.
Oregon: 219 child porn, sex charges
A Bend man faces 219 child pornography and sex abuse charges in an investigation that began with police on the Oregon coast.
David Anthony Windham was being held on $5.3 million bail Saturday at the Deschutes County Jail in Bend.
Deschutes County sheriff’s Lt. Erik Utter told KTVZ-TV in Bend that detectives were contacted Wednesday by Port Orford police who were investigating the 43-year-old Windham.
Based on their information, Deschutes County detectives began an investigation and on Thursday raided Windham’s home near Bend.
Windham was initially arrested on two Curry County warrants for felon in possession of a firearm and failure to register as a sex offender.
Examining the evidence from the raid led to the additional charges.
Man drives blazing truck to fire station
Truck on fire? Forget calling 911. Craig Brown of Carlton just drove a few more blocks to the McMinnville Fire Station when smoke started to billow from under the hood of his pickup.
McMinnville Fire Marshal Eric McMullen says a firefighter who’d been outside Friday morning washing an ambulance rushed inside to get help. Firefighters opened the hood and found flames licking around the engine. They quickly grabbed a hose and put out the fire.
