AMBOY — The closest viewing point to Mount St. Helens, the Johnston Ridge Observatory, will close for the winter on Nov. 9.
The Forest Service says it will reopen in mid-May, depending on snow levels.
The Mount St. Helens Visitor Center at Silver Lake near I-5 will remain open this winter. It’s operated by the state.
Seattle: Alaskan Way Viaduct called ‘stable’
The latest inspection of the Alaskan Way Viaduct in Seattle found no new settlement or structural damage.
The Transportation Department says repairs have stabilized the structure that sank 5.5 inches in the years following the 2001 Nisqually earthquake.
The department says it will continue to monitor and inspect the elevated highway along the Seattle waterfront until it is torn down in 2012.

King County prosecutors say a Bellevue man flashed a badge and pretended to be a police officer to coerce a prostitute into giving him free sex.
Prosecutors filed charges of extortion and criminal impersonation Wednesday against the 27-year-old man, Sasidhar Vanapalli.
Prosecutors requested his passport be seized because he’s a citizen of India. He’s jailed in Seattle on $500,000 bail.
Spokane: Officer facing assault charge
A prosecutor says he’ll file a fourth-degree assault charge against a Spokane police officer accused of kicking a handcuffed man in the face.
The Pend Oreille County deputy prosecutor appointed to the case, Michael Carbone, told the Spokesman-Review on Thursday he would file the charge in Spokane Municipal Court.
Officer Rob Boothe is accused of kicking 22-year-old John P. Luna on Sept. 5 after stolen car and foot chases.
