Clues have surfaced about the Steinway & Sons piano that has been at the Everett Civic Auditorium, perhaps since 1940.
The date was fuzzy in a story that appeared May 30. Rumor had it the piano was purchased in 1939 or 1940 by the Everett Ladies Musical Club, but that was not verified.
Janet Westmoreland Bryant, who lives in Idaho, was told about the article by her sister in California. You know how things fly around the Internet.
“I just called my 93-year-old father, Ben Westmoreland Jr.,” Bryant wrote by email. “He agrees with the premise that the Everett Ladies Musical Club did buy the piano for the Civic Auditorium.”
Her grandmother, Esther Westmoreland, was extremely active in the Everett Ladies Musical Club,” Bryant says.
“My mother was also a member,” she says. “Growing up in Everett, I was in the Junior Music Club, and then in the Everett Ladies Musical Club for the two and one-half years I taught at Cascade before my husband graduated from the University of Washington and we moved to California.”
Ben Westmoreland Jr. was born and raised in Everett and still lives here with his wife, Charlotte Westmoreland. He recalls that the ladies bought the piano for the Civic. His mother was in the musical club and was president a couple of times.
Bryant said the family lived across the street from famous composer William Bolcom.
“I remember hearing him practice when I was young,” she says.
They are very patriotic at McClain Insurance Services. This isn’t the first time they’ve given away flags at 10410 19th Ave. SE, Suite 100, in Everett.
To honor Flag Day on June 14, you can exchange a used flag for a new one, thanks to McClain and PEMCO Insurance.
Take them a frayed or faded flag between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. through Friday and receive a new 3-foot by 5-foot model.
Used flags will be collected, and in cooperation with Boy Scout Troop 16, retired in a ceremony at 7 p.m. June 13 at Mukilteo State Park at 601 Front St. in Mukilteo.
Last year, more than 100 flags were exchanged.

Norma Pilkenton says the Memorial Day ceremony organized by Snohomish County Central Memorial Committee at Evergreen Cemetery went very well.
“It didn’t even rain,” she says. “Everyone thought it was the best yet.”
She estimates as many as 225 folks came to the service, and about 50 attended a meatloaf luncheon at the Fleet Reserve Association afterwards.
