SEATTLE — More than two-thirds of Washington voters say President Barack Obama was not a factor as they cast ballots in the heated U.S. Senate race between incumbent Democrat Patty Murray and Republican Dino Rossi.
Two-fifths of voters said they were most concerned about electing a senator who understands their needs, Associated Press preliminary exit poll results and pre-election polls showed. The rest were split over finding a candidate with the right experience, who wasn’t too extreme or who could bring change.
Murray, who is seeking her fourth term, polled well among women, older voters and union workers. Rossi, a former state senator and real estate investor, found support among men, middle-age voters and Tea Party supporters.
The survey was conducted by Edison Research. Results for the full sample were subject to sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
