President Barack Obama has nominated Tracie Stevens of the Tulalip Tribes to be chairwoman of the National Indian Gaming Commission, the nation’s primary regulator of gambling activities on tribal lands.
Stevens, who was nominated April 28, must be vetted by the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. It is unknown how long the process will take.
If confirmed, she will lead the three-member panel that regulates gaming activities on American Indian lands. This industry produced $27 billion in revenues in 2009.
