BLAINE — U.S. Customs inspectors seized more than a half-ton of high potency "B.C. Bud" marijuana from a beer truck in what they called the largest such bust on the U.S.-Canada border.
Customs officers working the commercial truck crossing here late Tuesday night noticed a strong marijuana odor when they opened the back of the truck, bound for California.
Inside, they found 34 large hockey bags containing more than 1,400 pounds of marijuana, mingled with a bottled beer shipment.
The truck driver was arrested and taken to the Whatcom County jail. The case will be prosecuted in Whatcom County Superior Court, the Customs Service said in a statement.
Since October, Customs inspectors here have seized more than 2 tons of B.C. Bud hidden in commercial trucks, said Peg Fearon, port director for Customs in Blaine.
The wholesale value of the 2 tons is about $12 million, she said, adding the Tuesday night seizure was the largest along the country’s northern border.
