RICHLAND — Department of Energy officials say they do not anticipate any layoffs at Hanford despite a proposed budget that would sharply decrease funding for the next fiscal year.
The Tri-City Herald reported that despite that, Gov. Jay Inslee says he is still “extremely concerned” about what a reduced budget would mean for cleanup work.
The Obama administration has proposed a 2017 fiscal budget to Congress that would cut the budget for the Richland Operations office by almost $191 million to $800 million.
The Richland office is responsible for all cleanup other than the 56 million gallons of radioactive waste in underground tanks and the vitrification plant being built to treat it.
Inslee wrote in a letter to congressional leaders that the Hanford cleanup is extremely important to residents of the Pacific Northwest.
