OLYMPIA — The Olympia police chief is defending the arrest of a disabled man that led to a protest against excessive force.
Chief Ronnie Roberts said Thursday that officers acted properly June 1 when they arrested a man who can hear but cannot speak.
Roberts said 45-year-old Scott Yoos disappeared behind a building suspiciously when an officer encountered him late at night and then refused to cooperate. Yoos pleaded not guilty Wednesday in Olympia Municipal Court to charges of criminal trespass and obstructing justice.
The Olympian reported about 100 protesters at Tuesday’s city council meeting said Yoos had only discarded trash in a bin.
Police said he tried to ride off on a bike and refused to communicate by writing. He was tacked and handcuffed.
