PORT ANGELES – The eastbound lane of U.S. 101 will be closed near the east end of Crescent Lake until unstable rocks can be removed or reinforced following a weekend rock slide, state transportation officials said Sunday.
One lane of U.S. 101 was reopened just before midnight Saturday, about two and a half hours after a rock slide closed the road about 16 miles west of this Clallam County community.
The slide, which closed the road in both directions, occurred about 9 p.m.
Rock fell into the roadway at milepost 228, within the boundary of Olympic National Park. State Department of Transportation crews were providing flagged traffic control around the clock.
Doug Anderson and Mike Mulhern, transportation department engineering geologists, inspected the site Sunday afternoon and determined that some additional unstable rock should be removed or reinforced with rock bolts near the eastbound land.
The repair and removal work was scheduled to begin this afternoon. Once blasting begins, motorists can expect periodic 20- to 30-minute delays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily until the work is completed, the department said.
