Sew: Make a blanket for kids in trauma

The local Project Linus National Make-a-Blanket Day is set for noon to 5 p.m. Feb. 20 at Zion Lutheran Parish Hall, 330 Union Ave., Snohomish. Help make quilts and blankets to donate to Snohomish County kids who have experienced traumatic life events.

Materials and equipment are provided, although you are encouraged to bring a sewing machine if you have one. Volunteers are needed to help sew, iron, inspect, pin and tie. Come for an hour or the whole time. No experience is necessary.

Teach: Residents invited to share skills

Sky Valley Community Schools, sponsored by the Monroe School District, seeks residents to share their interests and skills with others in the community for its spring and summer sessions. The deadline to return an instructor’s form is Feb. 23. Most instructors receive 60 percent of registration fees.

Sit: Help Fido learn canine etiquette

Dog obedience classes start in March at the Mountlake Terrace Recreation Pavilion, 5303 228th St. SW.

“Puppygarten” is for puppies 8 to 16 weeks old and works on socialization and basic obedience including walking on a leash and commands like “sit,” “down” and “come.” This class meets 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, March 10 through April 14. Fees are $80 for Mountlake Terrace residents and $85 for nonresidents.

“Basic Dog Obedience,” for dogs 5 months and older, teaches basic skills and commands, including “stay.” This class meets 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Mondays, March 7 through April 18. Fees are $85 residents, $90 nonresidents.

“Intermediate Obedience” is for dogs that have completed basic obedience and builds on skills. This class meets 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesdays, March 9 through April 9. Fees are $80 residents, $85 nonresidents.

Cram: Take a sample state examination

This spring, students in grades 3 through 8 along with high school sophomores and juniors will take annual state tests, known as Smarter Balanced Assessments.

A limited number of Everett School District parents are invited to learn more and take a hands-on sample test at 6 p.m. Feb. 22 at the Community Resource Center, 3900 Broadway. Registration is required, online at tinyurl.com/gw7jkl2.

Support: Arts fest for Schack nears

Sip a Schack-tini while bidding on local art, wine and more at H’Arts 2016, a benefit for Schack Art Center, starting at 5 p.m. Feb. 27 at the Edward D. Hansen Conference Center at the Xfinity Arena, 2000 Hewitt Ave., Everett. Tickets are $120.

Dance: Do-si-do for Alzheimer’s research

The annual Alzheimer’s Benefit Dance, organized by Joe Bahr of the Sky Valley Whirlwinds dance club in Mill Creek, is set for 1-4 p.m. Feb. 28 at Leota Junior High School, 19301 168th Ave. NE, Woodinville. All donations go to research programs at the University of Washington, Rush University, and Alzheimer’s Association.
