Pony up: Dads, learn to do daughter’s hair

“Daddy, will you braid my hair?”

Gulp.

Learn how at a “Daddy Does Hair” class, to be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Rotary Ranch in Jennings Park, 6915 Armar Road, Marysville. The Marysville Parks, Culture and Recreation class costs $10 for registration and $10 for materials.

Dads will get to take hair accessories home, along with newfound knowledge on hair care basics, including how to do pony tails, braiding, curling and simple up-dos.

Create: Art contests for Eagle Festival

The Arlington-Stillaguamish Eagle Festival is set for Feb. 6 this year, and a trio of art contests invite local participation.

Haiku poetry: Up to two submissions with themes tied to nature, due by midnight Jan. 31. Prizes of $50 in three age groups, from kindergarten to adult. Submit online at www.arlingtonwa.gov/haikucontest or by mail to City of Arlington, Recreation, 238 N Olympic Ave., Arlington, WA 98223, or place in a collection box at Arlington Library or Arlington City Hall.

Photography: Eagle photography contest, one entry per person with entry fee of $5. Cash prize of $100 for winner. Artists must drop off framed work 12-6 p.m. Feb. 5. Application and more information is at arlingtonwa.gov/eaglefest.

Count: Volunteers needed for survey

Volunteers are needed to help with this year’s Point in Time Count of Snohomish County homeless populations Jan. 28. There will be short training sessions, then volunteers will head out in groups to survey at specific locations.

Supplies, snacks and drinks are provided.

Donations of hygiene products, hand warmers and flashlights also are welcome.

Learn: Boating class coming up

The Everett Sail and Power Squadron offers the seven-week “America’s Boating Course” on the fundamentals of safe boating, Feb. 8 through March 21. Topics include types of boats, boating laws, required safety equipment and more.

Students who successfully complete a final test qualify for the Washington State Boater Education card, which is required before operating watercraft.

Classes will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Mondays at the Port of Everett Orca Room at 404 14th St., Everett. Cost is $50, $35 for Squadron members. A second person sharing supplies is $20.
