Gawk: Two chances to see the king of Norway
The public will have two opportunities to see King Harald V of Norway on May 23 when he visits Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma in honor of the university’s 125th anniversary.
The king’s visit to PLU represents his only public appearances during his official visit to Washington.
PLU was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1890. Norwegians make up the largest number of international students studying at PLU. The king last visited the campus in 1995; in 1999, Crown Prince Haakon paid a visit.
The public is invited to help welcome the king to the university campus; he is slated to arrive at 11:15 a.m. Spectators may line the path leading to and around Centennial Plaza (“Red Square”). Music and entertainment will begin at 10:45 a.m., and the crowd will receive Norwegian and American flags to wave.
The public also is welcome at the commencement ceremony, set for 2:30 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome.
