Reserve: Seniors can get seats for parade

Trinity Lutheran College offers reserved front-row seating for senior citizens to view Everett’s annual Fourth of July parade. The section will be located under tents at the corner of Wetmore Avenue and California Street with water, coffee, snacks and restroom access available in the Campus Center lobby.

Reservations must be made by Monday by calling Deb Wendt at 425-249-4716. The seating area opens at 10 a.m.; the parade starts at 11.

Goal: Street hockey tournament coming up

The Everett Silvertips Street Hockey Tournament returns July 19 at Everett’s downtown Clark Park. Teams are invited to register for a variety of age and skill divisions. Cost is $120 per team by Monday, or $140 after.

The day-long tournament will be held on the tennis courts. There will be food, games music and more, along with prizes and signed memorabilia for the winning teams. The Silvertips provide the nets, boards and officials. Teams should bring their own sticks and approved goalie equipment.

Preserve: Learn how to can your harvest

Learn how to preserve the season’s harvests in an eight-lesson online food preservation program offered by the Washington State University Extension, or a one-day class at McCollum Park. The online course can be taken anytime but is a prerequisite to taking three hands-on classes offered later this summer.

“Preserve the Taste of Summer,” an online course designed for beginners as well as veteran canners, uses the most current USDA-approved food preservation recommendations. Cost is $25 for all eight lessons. To register, go to http://preservesummer.cahnrs.wsu.edu.

As an alternative, “Basics of Safe Canning” will be held 6:30-9 p.m. July 16 at WSU Snohomish County Extension’s Evergreen Room at McCollum Park, 600 128th St. SE, Everett. Cost is $20.

Either are required to take three hands-on workshops:

Jams, Jellies and Spreads, 6:30-9 p.m. July 30

Tomatoes, Salsa and Relish, 6:30-9 p.m. Aug. 13

Pickling and Fermenting, 6:30-9 p.m. Aug. 27

Class size is limited. Cost is $20 per workshop, or $60 for all four (including “Basics of Safe Canning”).

Boat: Everett Police course is free

The Everett Police Department offers a free “Adventures in Boating” course certified by the State Parks and Recreation department, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. July 12 at the South Precinct. Registration is required. Class size is limited to the first 30 students.

The Island County Board of Commissioners seeks applicants to serve on the following groups. The deadline for applications for both is 4:30 p.m. July 7.

Northwest Workforce Development Council (current positions to be filled are from the private and business sector, economic development, a community based organization, and the local kindergarten to 12th grade education field)

Joint Administration Board (representative of the lodging industry on Camano Island)
