Jaunt: Bicycle in tweed for this ride

The Snohomish Tweed Ride is set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Don your Victorian, Edwardian or even Steampunk garb — just no lycra, jeans or modern clothes — and take a jaunt through pastoral landscapes.

Be sure to bring a picnic. Enjoy jolly diversions, teas, and sweets from event organizers.

The ride starts from Snohomish Carnegie Foundation, 105 Cedar Ave., and toodles along the Centennial Trail. Cost is $15 and benefits Historic Downtown Snohomish.

Walk: Dogs need exercise

HappyPaws Farm Humane Society seeks volunteers to help walk large dogs on Sunday afternoons on the grounds of its shelter grounds, located at 19933 Old Burn Road in Arlington. Volunteers should be at least 18 years old and experienced with dogs. The dogs include friendly pit bulls.

Other volunteers also are needed, including someone who can install older-style security cameras.

Explore: Learn more about 4-H

The annual Explore 4-H Open House is set for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Beef Pavilion at the Evergreen State Fairgrounds, 14405 179th Ave. SE, Monroe. Learn about 4-H’s 25-plus programs, the benefits of 4-H, and how to find a club.

Learn: Boating 101 in Lake Stevens

The Lake Stevens Police Department plans an “Adventures in Boating” class, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 1 at the Lake Stevens Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE. The deadline to register is Sept. 27. The class fulfills the requirements needed to obtain a Boater Education Card. The class costs $15.

To get their card, students also would need to pass a written test and pay a $10 state fee.

Class size is limited. Registration is required.

Write: VFW essay contests under way

Students are invited to enter their local Veterans of Foreign Wars post’s essay contests.

In grades 3-5, the Youth Essay Program asks for 250 words on “Why are men and women who serve in the military special?” The Patriot’s Pen essay contest for grades 6-8 asks for 300 to 400 words on “The America I Believe In.” In high school, the Voice of Democracy audio essay contest asks for a 3- to 5-minute recording about “My Responsibility to America.”

Local posts honor winners, who then are forwarded to the district level for higher honors. The Washington State VFW sponsors the elementary contest. The national VFW sponsors the middle and high school competitions.

The entry deadline for all essays is Nov. 1. To find a local VFW post, turn inside to today’s In Uniform column.
