The Edmonds Historical Museum’s annual Scarecrow Festival is under way. Individuals, groups, businesses, artists and others in the city are encouraged to craft their own version of a scarecrow for the fun community-building event.

Registration continues through Oct. 22. Voting starts Oct. 23. Prizes for winners in each category include membership to the Edmonds Museum and a gala reception.

Also, on Oct. 20, the program partners with Art Walk Edmonds for a Third Thursday Art Walk “Art Stalk” tour of nearby scarecrows.

Drill: Take a day for family fire safety

SafeKids Snohomish County and Snohomish County Fire District 1 encourage families to make an escape plan and then put it into practice on Home Fire Drill Day on Saturday.

“In the event of an emergency, a child could feel overwhelmed or worried,” said Safe Kids Snohomish County coordinator Shawneri Guzman in a statement. “Practicing on Home Fire Drill Day can help teach your children how to be prepared in case of a home fire.”

Pick a family safety spot outside that’s near your home and a safe distance away.

Test your smoke alarms with your kids so they know what the beep sounds like.

For children younger than 6, assign an adult to help them.

Use a timer to ensure everyone can get out to the safety spot in two minutes or less.

Prepare for the practice by drawing out a plan based on the exits around the home.

Prepare: Volunteer tax aides needed

AARP Tax-Aide seeks local volunteers for tax counseling positions. Volunteers receive training in December and January in cooperation with, and using training material provided by, the Internal Revenue Service.

Volunteers will help low- and middle-income taxpayers prepare and electronically file their tax returns from Feb. 1 through April 15. Special attention is paid to filers age 60 and older. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are welcome.

Last year, more than 80 volunteer counselors helped nearly 3,700 people file their federal returns at a dozen sites across Snohomish County.
