Eager to make the town more attractive for economic development, the Medford, Ore., City Council has approved corporate brands on the airport control tower.
The council voted Thursday night to amend the city code to allow 25-by-25-foot signs on all four sides of the 100-foot-tall tower, a landmark on the outskirts of the city.
City Councilor Al Densmore says that in a perfect world, he would love to keep public buildings clear of things like advertising. But he says the $3,000 a month expected from the corporate logo will help lower landing fees, making the airport more attractive to new air carriers.
Allen Adamson, managing director of the global branding firm Landor, says the idea is “a no-brainer,” and he expects many airports to follow Medford’s lead.
