GRESHAM, Ore. — Police say family members thought a 4-year-old Gresham boy was going to his bedroom for a toy when he left a Saturday night gathering with friends.
Instead, police say, the boy carried a plastic stool into his grandfather’s bedroom. There, police believe, he took his grandfather’s 9 mm handgun off the top of a gun safe, unholstered it and fired a round that took off part of his right index finger.
The Oregonian reported that doctors were unable to reattach it.
Police said the boy and his family recently moved into an apartment with the 48-year-old grandfather.
The round went through a mattress and into the wall.
The boy was released from the hospital Sunday.
Police said Monday that no charges had been filed.
