PORTLAND, Ore. — Oregon cities say they’ll try to get the Legislature next year to allow them to tax marijuana once it’s legal in the state.
At least 70 cities have passed ordinances to tax pot. Earlier this month, Oregon voters legalized it, beginning next year.
The Oregonian reports the League of Oregon cities will ask legislators to amend that initiated measure to allow local taxes.
Proponents of the Oregon marijuana measure say it prohibits local taxes.
They also say they deliberately set a state tax rate lower than the one in Washington state so that buying legal marijuana would be more attractive than on the black market.
Local taxes, they say, will encourage continued sales outside the law.
