PORTLAND, Ore. — Several Oregon senators and representatives are pushing for funding to clean up and reduce toxins in the Columbia River Basin.
The bill, introduced on Wednesday, seeks to authorize $50 million per year for five years for a grant program. Tribes, farmers, foresters, conservation districts, nonprofit groups, and local and state governments could apply for the funds.
Toxins in the river range from pesticides to flame retardants to pharmaceuticals. Studies have shown they impact fish and human health.
A similar bill was introduced in 2010 but didn’t get a floor vote.
