KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. — A Eugene man jailed after a car chase that ended when his vehicle burst into flames has died.
Deputies at the Klamath County Jail called an ambulance early Monday morning for 39-year-old James Emary when he seemed to be in medical distress. He was pronounced dead at Sky Lakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls.
An autopsy is planned. The sheriff’s office told KVAL that Emary was alone in a cell and there is no indication of foul play.
He was arrested Sunday after an Oregon State Police trooper pulled over a Toyota Camry for a traffic violation on U.S. 97 north of the California border.
The trooper’s computer search showed that Emary was wanted on three felony warrants.
As the trooper approached the car to arrest Emary, the man fled southbound.
The chase lasted for a few miles until smoke and flames from under the hood persuaded Emary to pull over. The fire fully engulfed the car as he was taken into custody.
