BEND, Ore. — The Bureau of Land Management’s list of renewable energy projects includes two wind projects proposed for Oregon’s High Desert.
The Bulletin newspaper in Bend reports the West Butte Wind project in Crook County and the Echanis Wind project near Steens Mountain in Harney County would be constructed on private land. However, they would need the BLM’s approval to string transmission lines across public land.
BLM management analyst Derrick Henry says the priority list is part of the Obama administration’s push to diversify the nation’s energy portfolio.
Henry says projects on the list have demonstrated they are far enough into the process to clear certain levels of environmental review and public participation.
