Arlington

Genealogical group meets

The Stillaguamish Valley Genealogical Society is meeting at 7 p.m. Oct. 9, at the society’s library, 135 N. Olympic Ave. There will be a program of genealogical interest for the first hour, followed by a business meeting.

It is not necessary to have roots in Snohomish County to participate. Visitors are welcome.

Edmonds

Sons of Norway to serve breakfast

Edmonds Lodge Sons of Norway is serving a pancake breakfast on Saturday.

Norwegian pancakes with strawberries, ham, juice and coffee or tea will be served from 7:30 a.m. to noon at the Masonic Center, 515 Dayton St.

Scandinavian music and a bake sale are planned. A $6 donation for adults is suggested, with children 5 years and younger admitted free.

Everett

University offers special-ed degree

City University’s Everett campus will offer a new master’s degree in teaching with a special-education endorsement, aimed at meeting the high demand for special education teachers.

So far, 27 students have enrolled.

The private school’s program is patterned after another program that awards students a bachelor’s degree in education with a special-education endorsement. That program was created in cooperation with the Everett School District.

Job fair to open career paths

Looking for a job? It may be time to update your resume. The Snohomish County Job Fair takes place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 12 at Everett Community College, 2000 Tower St. Parking in the lot at the 10th Street and Broadway is free. Island County

Farm tour hosted on Camano Island

The Snohomish Conservation District is hosting a Camano Island farm tour and soil sample demonstration on Saturday.

Members of Best Management Practices will demonstrate how they reduce mud and simplify chores at a Camano Island horse boarding facility. Gutters, downspouts, manure management, pasture management techniques and grass selection will also be discussed.

Lake Stevens

Halloween road closures pending

The City Council is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. tonight, at the Community-Senior Center, 1808 Main St.

On the agenda for the workshop session are Halloween road closures, a drug-testing agreement and a closed executive session to discuss personnel.

On Oct. 16, the council will begin meeting at the Lake Stevens School District Administration Building, 12309 22nd St. NE.

Lynnwood

Department hires five new officers

The Lynnwood Police Department has hired five new officers in the past month.

Officers Joe Dickinson, Tyler Mellema and Brad Reorda joined the department Sept. 22. Officer Jake Shorthill and reserve officer Doug Beardsley joined the force in late August.

Dickinson, Mellema, Reorda and Shorthill graduated from the Basic Law Enforcement Academy in Burien prior to being hired by the department.

Beardsley served as a reserve officer for four years in Long Beach and Ilwaco on the Washington coast while he worked as a paramedic.

Lynnwood has 67 police officers.

Marysville

Major annexation all but finalized

The City Council is scheduled to meet in a workshop at 7 tonight at 1049 State Ave.

Among other items on the agenda, city officials will be briefed on the final vote necessary to complete the 1,500-acre Sunnyside-Whiskey Ridge annexation.

That vote likely will be scheduled at the next regular council meeting, Oct. 9.

Monroe

Concert band needs members

The Monroe Community Concert Band is seeking additional members. The band practices from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at New Hope Fellowship Church, 1016 W. Main St.

The band includes people who hadn’t played instruments for years. The band aims to become a 50-piece band and needs people who play saxophones, French horns, clarinets and other instruments.

Mukilteo

Yacht club plans weekend cruise

The Mukilteo Yacht Club invites the public on its journey to Port Townsend Friday through Sunday.

Club members plan to watch the Kinetic Sculpture Races and walk in the Kinetic Sculpture Race Parade on Saturday morning.

Snohomish

High school parade Friday

The Snohomish High School Serpentine Parade, a more than 100-year-old tradition, will take place at 1 p.m. Friday in parts of downtown, including a five-block stretch of Fifth Street between Union Avenue and Avenue E.

The homecoming parade is one of the last in the state. And with more than 2,000 teenagers dressed in red-and-white regalia, it can tie up traffic during its half-hour duration.

Stanwood

Sno-Isle library offers story time

Fall story times have begun at the Stanwood Library. On Wednesdays, baby story time is at 9:30 a.m. and toddler story time is at 10:30 a.m.

Preschool story time is at 10:30 a.m. on Thursdays. Parents are invited to bring their children to join in age-appropriate activities and stories, while they share with other moms and dads.
