Amtrak station plans open house

Amtrak’s Edmonds Station is planning its eighth annual holiday open house from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Amtrak Station, 211 Railroad Ave.

The Swamp Creek Model Railroad Association is also scheduled to have an open house to showcase its elaborate model train layout at the station during the open house.

Santa Claus plans to arrive at 8:07 a.m. on the Cascades train No. 510. Refreshments are planned and Edmonds firefighters and paramedics will accept donations of new, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food in exchange for discount Amtrak travel vouchers.

Everett

Snow postpones Broadway closure

An overnight closure of Broadway at 41st Street planned in Everett on Monday has been postponed due to snowfall.

Crews now plan to close Broadway tonight and Wednesday night.

A dozen bridge girders that weigh up to 40 tons will be installed on the new Broadway Avenue bridge both nights.

Crews will close Broadway from 11 tonight until 6 a.m. Wednesday.

The stretch will be closed at the same times on Wednesday night and Thursday morning.

Senior driving classes offered

The American Association of Retired People is hosting a driver safety class from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Everett Senior Center, 3025 Lombard Ave., on Dec. 9.

Call 425-257-8780 to register. A $10 fee is charged to cover the cost of materials. Washington state insurers may offer auto insurance discount to those who complete the class.

Lake Stevens

City official will speak to Chamber

Lake Stevens finance director Jan Berg is the scheduled speaker at the Dec. 11 Greater Lake Stevens Chamber of Commerce monthly luncheon.

The event is planned for 11:30 a.m. at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center, 12309 22nd St. NE.

Cost is $15 for members and $20 for nonmembers. Pre-register and make payment via PayPal from the chamber’s Web site at www.lschamber.org.

Marysville

Ribbon cutting for road upgrades

City, county and state dignitaries plan to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 9 a.m. today to officially reopen State Avenue between 116th Street NE and 136th Street NE.

The two-year, $8.3 million project widened the road and added sidewalks, curbs and gutters.

Officials are now working on improvements to State Avenue between 136th Street NE and 152nd Street NE.

The ceremony is planned near the intersection of 116th Street NE and State Avenue.

Monroe

Food bank needs toys for children

Sky Valley Food Bank encourages people to participate in its toy drive.

The food bank seeks a variety of items: new toys, books, art supplies, gift certificates from local stores, restaurants, movie theaters, phone cards, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and wrapping paper and ribbon.

Donations must be made by Dec. 15 at 784 Village Way. The food bank is open from 8 to 11:30 a.m. and from 5:30 to 7 p.m. on Monday, and from 8 to 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday and Friday.

Last year, the food bank gave toys to nearly 650 children in Monroe. Monetary donations can be sent to Sky Valley Food Bank, P.O. Box 724, Monroe, WA 98272.

Mountlake Terrace

Property taxes up by 1 percent

Property owners in Mountlake Terrace will pay more in city taxes in 2007.

The City Council recently voted to raise city property taxes by 1 percent next year. The increase means the owner of a $300,000 home will pay about $12 more in city property taxes in 2007.

The 1 percent increase is expected to generate $37,000 in revenue for the year.

Mukilteo

Yacht club plans lighted boat cruise

Boaters are invited to join the Mukilteo Yacht Club for a lighted boat parade from the Port of Everett to Mukilteo and back on Saturday.

The parade is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at the Port of Everett and proceed to Mukilteo for the planned 7:15 p.m. lighting of the city Christmas tree.

Snohomish

City seeks parks board member

The city seeks applicants to fill a vacancy on its parks and recreation board. Applications are due by 4 p.m. Dec. 13 at City Hall, 116 Union Ave.

The term runs for three years, and the board directly advises the City Council regarding city parks and recreation programs.
